Freak Hail Storm, March 2005!

In what was a crazy night of weather, there was an extremely violent hail storm in a path in our area, 26 miles long and 2 miles wide (so said the insurance adjustor!) It hit one of the nights Kat was in town, while we were visitng at JR and Michael's. About three inches of pea-sized hail came down while we were there; the noise was deafening. After it ended, Lane, Lila and I drove home, to find that our home had been hit by, in some cases, golfball-sized hail.

When all was said and done, we needed a new roof, a new carport, and a whole lot of other stuff. Lane's truck, which was under the far side of the carport, sustained almost 360 degrees of damage from hail that came in almost horizontally across the carport, and also from hail that came in, hit the far wall, and bounced back and hit the opposite side of his truck. Insurance totalled his truck because it would be too expensive to repair. We figure my car would also have been totalled had it been there during the storm, so luckily it was not!

There's been roofing non-stop since this night in our neighborhood. We haven't done ours yet, but plan to soon.

Enjoy these photos from that crazy night!

At JR and Michael's

Out the front door at JR and Michael's.

Out their back door. All the light is the flash reflecting off the hail.

Hail like snow on the ground.

Final hail, about three inches, in their back yard. The winds knocked down a portion of their fence and JR's car was damaged - mine was barely damaged, which was strange.

At Our House

Some of the hail at our house, about two hours after it fell.

Hail on the ground, by my foot.

You can't see it very well, but there was a SEA of foliage on the ground in the street, on the sidewalks, in our yard, like a carpet of leaves and branches from the force of the storm. All of the trees and bushes had just started their spring budding, and all the leaves were green and tender and sweet....and then they were DASHED TO THE GROUND!!

Damage to the front of our roof.

The extensive damage to our carport. It looked as though someone took a ball peen hammer to it. There was even a giant hole ripped in it (not pictured here).
