Hill Country Ranch - MORE Animals!next page
MORE ANIMALS! It was like we were in a zoo!
I don't know what this is. Is it an emu? Someone tell me!!! It was pretty cool, whatever it was! Bird with attitude!
Kangaroo with joeys. Are wallabies kangaroo? I seem to remember someone saying they're wallabies. I could probably look that up online, but it's late and I have pages and pages to go. Forgive me for my lack of "native Texas animal" knowledge. HAHAHA!
OK, so this camel, he was REALLY PISSY and he chased JR and Michael's car when they came in, and then he chased Daddy and Loyd when they went to Kerrville on an errand. He actually BIT Loyd's car. I don't know what his problem is, but it's an Evil Camel. Actually, as a bit of Texas lore, this ranch is in the area of Camp Verde. Camp Verde is the site of the calvary experiment by U.S. Secretary of War Jefferson Davis. They tried to use camels instead of horses. Disney made a movie on it: Hawmps. (I LOVED that movie.) You can read more about that whole thing here and here.
I believe this is called in Ibex. It's some kind of gazelle. ?? All I know is that it had great horns. There were a ton of them, but I only really liked this photo.
This fawn was eating by the side of the road, and when JR and Michael approached, it did as all good fauns should do: drop to the ground and pretend not to be there. It didn't even flick an ear as we approached to take a photo. I know that his mommy, who was doubtless nearby, was very proud!
One of probably a hundred white-tailed deer we saw while we were at the ranch. They were EVERYWHERE. You'd be walking at night and walk up on a group of them and they'd stand stark still and then TAKE OFF and run. There's a feeder on the property and twice a day (morning and evening) they'd gather by the feeder.
Deer eyes at night, reflecting the flash. :) Ooooooh, spooky deer eyes!!
Javelinas (prounounced "HAVE-uh-leena") - or "wild pigs". They're MEAN, mean, mean. Stay away from them. A few years back, one charged Whitney!! This is by the same feeder where the deer come to eat. It was taken from WAY FAR OFF, so pardon the graininess.
