Hill Country Ranch - The Animals!next page
Our family and some friends spent a long weekend at a glorious ranch outside of Kerrville, Texas this past weekend (early June 2004). While we were there, we saw a TON of wildlife, some of it "wilder" than others! Below are photos of many of the animals we saw there. (A big thanks to JR who donated some of his photos for this whole ranch series!)
Majestic Longhorns. Longhorn cattle are just beautiful, and the colors of these were so vivid, especially against the green of the grass. You'll see throughout these photos that the grass is unusually green for this time of year in Texas; we've had a really wet spring and it shows in our countryside! There were about fifteen of these Longhorns in a group as we drove into the ranch, grazing ten or twenty feet from our car.
Would you believe BUFFALO!?! These were RIGHT by the car. The big one in the center, I just rolled down my window and snapped it as he stared as we drove by. There have been times coming out here when the buffalo were in the road, and they didn't want to move when we drove up! We would honk and honk and finally they'd get up and let us by! Very laid back buffalo.
Elk! Here are some shots of some kind of elk (no clue what kind). I do know that they have felt on their antlers, which is a Spring Thing; later, they'll rub it against trees and it'll reveal shiny antlers.
Lane took these of an armadillo forraging by the ranch house. It was night, so these photos look a little strange. Armadillos can carry leprosy, so don't get too close!! They are SO like little dinosaurs, aren't they? Imagine them BIG, like a horse, and rampaging through the Texas countryside. Even though they're small, like dogs, they're still pretty freaky. Especially with that whole leprosy thing...:)
ZEBRA! There was a herd of them running about. I think they are SO COOL. Like the tigers of the horse family. :) Rarrr! I'm a zebra!! (I'm sorry the top photo is so blurry! MY FAULT!!!)
This horse appears to be party horse, part zebra. I know he's wild. I remember stories about him in years past. He used to hang out more with the horses by the barn, but this year I only saw him with the zebra. Do you see the elk in the background to the left?
