Front Flower Bed, Spring 2005We had such a nice spring here that I decided to do something that I'd wanted to do for a few years now: enlarge our front flower bed. When we moved in, the tree out front was small, and the tiny bed we put around it was perfectly sized for the small tree. Over the years, our tree has probably tripled in size, maybe more, and the bed has stayed the same size. It has looked sad and pathetic for a while. So, enlisting the help of my Trusty Workman Lane, I redesigned and rebuilt the front bed. We were able to complete it the day before Mother's Day, when we had family over to dinner. They were very impressed! Thank you Lane for all your help!
Because we were not thinking ahead, we didn't get any photos of the "before" that were really any good. This is pretty much it. You can see me, about to begin directing the Sod Removal Process (SRP) to Trusty Workman Lane. I stress that this could not be done without his participation!
Laying out the hose in the shape of the bed.
Lane begins the SRP.
More SRP.
While the bed was rebuilt, I took this opportunity to have Lane turn the compost pile. In it he found the roots of a Giant Creature that had been growing there last year and died over the winter.
Lane also found this errant fork in the very bottom of the compost pile.
Trusty Workman Lane, unhappy with the work in the sun and heat. He took this photo of himself. :)
The finished product, from the back, several months later.
Can you see the path dividing the kidney-bean shaped bed? I love that path, and have it bordered with irises and fern. My favorite thing in the whole bed is a split-leaf philidendron (sp?) that was a cutting I've grown for years from Sondra's mom.
Hidden between the plants is a tiny iron Boston Terrier. It's just left of center. Can you see it? It used to show up a lot more before the plants got big.
A view from the side.
TWO BONUS PHOTOS of the two juvenile blue herons in our backyard! These are probably decendents of the two birds we photographed from this same time last year.
