J9 was Carnaval Barbie this year. She started out envisioning (and purchasing things for) an entirely different costume than this one, and while wandering through the craft store with me, she hit upon another idea and RAN with it. The ponytails came first, then the ribbon bangs and "wig". She was inspired by geisha sleeves and used those as elements. Then the day or two before Carnaval, she found the turquoise trim that brought her color scheme together. I love her expression in this shot. It's so fierce!!

Here she is early in the evening, when her headdress and costume was choosing to still behave. J9 suffered more costume malfunctions than we've ever had at Carnaval. First, one of the strands of lights in her headdress quit working. Then the ponytails began to lose curlicues and to also fall into each other rather than staying out like ponytails should. Finally, one of the bits of her arm bands slid down and then eventually fell off altogether! She said it was the first time Fabri-Tac had failed her. I agree! Usually, you can bank your life on Fabri-Tac, but this time, it gave out for whatever reason.

A FANTASTIC shot of J9's makeup. She started with this concept of red around the eyes and a little cupie-doll mouth. She wanted dramatic lower lashes, but couldn't find any she liked, so she drew them on with black liner! Her upper lashes are a set of hot pink lashes with huge black lashes over the top. I loved how she did her eyebrows here. I'm not sure if she had to wax them down, but I know she borrowed a chunk of my wax. I shall ask her and report back!

One of the only views of the top of her eye makeup. I LOVED the stripe of turquoise she used flanked by that deep purple. It was awesome! You can also see here how her headdress was in two pieces. There was the part over the baseball cap with the bangs, and then an upper part with the ponytails and a section that covered her hair and used the chin strap.

Here J9 flies like an anime superhero. Her sleeves didn't lend themselves to holding her arms up; they looked best down. It let her strike several interesting poses that really made her look amazing.

A nice detail shot of J9's sleeves. She used all these little fused pieces of fabric - I have NO IDEA how she did it - she'll have to tell you more herself. Her boots are the same shoes from last year, "slip covered" again, this time as little short boots with fringe, trimmed in turquoise.

Here witness the beginning of the end for one of the turquoise bands on J9's sleeves. See how it's slipped down to her elbow from the top? Her pasties are very geometric, echoing the patterns in her sleeves and in the closure for her skirt. You can't see it, but in the tiny, tiny thong she made, there's also a little purple dot in the front of the thong. Her costumes all goes together!
