Carnaval 2002

Me, at Sondra's. I am wearing a beaded bellydance dress with a gold thong under it, and pasties that look like armor (see my mermaid tattoo on my right hip?). I cut the pasties out of crinoline, fit them to my body and covered them with gold lamme. The various pasties are actually really simple to create. Sondra, J9 and Rita are trying to get me to market my own line. If I could come up with a catchy name, I might! (If you have any suggestions, please let me know!)

My original costume conception was as a unicorn, with my hair as the mane, but after handmaking, firing and painting my own horn, and spending two hours latexing it to my forehead, it was too heavy and wouldn't hold. Hence, the giant sparkley on my forehead to help hide the redness from the latex!

My hair was done up in 5 sets of rods that I stiffened with 20 gauge wire (I had about 20 yards of it in my hair). The rods were wrapped in gold tissue lamme and the ends were left long. An ostrisch boa was folded over and suspended between the rods, where it hung like a mane down my back. Without the horn, it was very "Vegas showgirl". Kind of annoying that my original concept didn't work out, but you have to roll with the costume punches, don't you?!

A close-up of my makeup. I had shaved the sides of my eyebrows to achieve that perfect "Drag Queen" look, and used both upper and lower false eyelashes. I'm thinking pretty hard about a new section of the site called "Zuul's Inner Drag Queen", and spotlighting my costumes over the years, all the way back into childhood.

The makeup I prefer is a costume line called "Ben Nye", that you can get at most costume shops. It's extremely saturated and full of deep colors. The makeup artist I admire most is Kevyn Aucoin. If you're at all interested in that kind of thing, check out his books, "Face Forward", "Making Faces" and "The Art of Makeup", all available via Amazon. He is a makeup GOD. He will change the way you think of your face forever!

Lane, with the eyemakeup he allowed me to do. Don't his eyes look blue? Mmmmmmmmm, pretty Lane........

Cute girl, Sondra and Brehan. We LOVED their headdresses and are looking to make our own next year!
