My Cats!

I've had Edie FOREVER. She was the first pet I got after I moved out of the house after graduating college and she's seen me through A LOT. I love her so much. I got her from the pound when she was just a kitten. I had been looking for another kind of cat, but when I walked by her cage, I swear she reached out with her paw and sort of grabbed for me. I looked into her eyes and knew she was the one for me. Her full name is Edith Marie Sedgewick. I call her "Miss Boo" or "Boobooski" or just "Boo". When she's bad, I call her "Marie". :) She has fur as soft as a bunny rabbit. Edie likes to play with balls of Hershey's Kiss wrappers and with feathers. She loves almost ALL people food. She loves vaseline (it's good for preventing hairballs). Every time I've brought home another animal, she looks at me with such disdain, like HERE WE GO AGAIN!!! :) Actually, that's not true. She was pretty psyched about my bringing home Xiang. :) She's starting to love Lila. See more of her here, as well as using the menus above.

Update 9/04: Edie has passed away. Please come see the tribute page I made for her here.

Lava was Lane's and my first pet together. We got him from a litter in San Antonio, and he slept on my chest the whole way home. We knew we wanted an orange cat - Lane had the name Lava all picked out - and this litter had two of them. Their owner, Sheri (who turned out later to become a friend of ours), held both orange kittens up and said "this one is kind of plain and sweet; this one is really pretty but is kind of mean". Can you guess which one we chose? We picked "sweet", but we'd beg to differ on the "plain" part. Sheri told a story later about Lava's mommy not producing enough milk for her whole litter, so she dragged the runt, Lava, off to a closet to die!! They found him in there and got her medicine to make more milk, and he lived and was a joy to us. I still cry when I think of that story and how close we came to having never have known him. His full name was Little LavaLava. Lava loved to climb trees, to sit on the roof and to play with string. He had little angel wings in fur on his back and an "omega" on his head. He died several years ago, however; we still miss him. See more of him here, as well as using the menus above.

Pumpkin is the orange kitty we got after Lava died. I went to the Humane Society the very next day and picked out the only orange kitten they had. He was so friendly, everyone who saw me playing with him wanted him for their own, but I had already claimed him! We had to leave him there for a while because he was sick, in fact, he wasn't even supposed to be out for adoption, he was so sick. We brought him home and nursed him to health (it took almost a year for him to quick being kind of sickly). He had spent so much time in tiny cages that when we brought him home, he was frightened to venture forth from the hallway into the "giant" (haha) living room! Now he's the king of the house. His full name is Pumpkin Umpkin Splishsplish. He thinks he's a dog. He loves dog food, being scratched, playing with Pitter & Grits and sleeping on Lane's feet at night. So....in early January 2005, I had this really vivid dream about Edie, my sweetest kitty who died in September. She came to me, hatching out of an egg, and she was healthy and fat and soft and so beautifully colored, like when she was younger. As I held her, she changed into another cat, a grey cat with green/yellow eyes, and when I woke up, I knew it was time to look for another cat. I started online with the place we got Pumpkin and then to the place I'd gotten Edie (both are animal shelters), but I didn't see a cat there that "connected". I started looking out of town, and ended up at a PAWS shelter in a nearby town. I saw a photo of a kitty, not one like I had dreamed, but one that reminded me instantly of Edie - she didn't look the same, but definitely had an attitude about her that was reminicient of Edie. I called that day and my father met me at the shelter to watch Lila while I checked out the kitty. She was perfect. Initially, we named her "Mimi", short for "Mimosa", but that just didn't stick, so after a week or so, I hit upon "Mimsy". So this is Mimsy (Mimosa) Licksalot Porpington, our newest addition. Please join me in welcoming her to our family!

Mimsy loves to lick, to chase Pumpkin and to play with all of Lila's toys. She loves the dogs. She thinks she wants to go outside, but she's not sure. She's sweet and trouble and a general KITTEN. We love her. See more of her here, as well as using the menus above.

Sooooo....take 2!!....There was a cat at the local Petsmart. She was rescued from the animal shelter a long time back, fostered for a long time and then finally put into the store for months and months (at least three). I've watched her for about that long, as she reminds me of my first cat, Muffin.

As the months went by, I could see her fur starting to get that look to it, the "I'm not feeling well enough about myself to bother cleaning myself" look, and I knew that no one would want to adopt her looking like that. Her file said that she was good with dogs, cats, and small children, which you almost NEVER see in a foster pet, so I told Lane that if we came back from our vacation in September 2005 and she was still available for adoption, I wanted to bring her home.

She was, and we did. Her name on the file was "Dinah", but I wanted to call her "Izzy" or "Dora", so we named her "Isadora Dinah Duncan". The name that's stuck, however, seems to be "New Kitty". LOL! My parents had a cat for years named "Wild Kitty", so it's not a huge stretch for me to call her New Kitty, and Lila likes it fine, too, so that's what it is. Her sheet said she was 3, but I'm guessing more like 5 or 6 - I think "three" is sheet code for "really, she's not going to die any time soon, don't worry..." :)

She's doing well here - I've been brushing her every day, and she's starting to look much better. She's still a little shy, and I often have to hunt her down, but I'm really enjoying having her. See more of her here, as well as using the menus above.
